Syzygy :: 1999

Syzygy 26/02/99-28/03/99, Beaconsfield Arts, London
was a major project developed by 0rphan drift and the Cybernetic Culture Research Unit for Beaconsfield Arts London, and funded by the Arts Council of England.

Responding to the prevalent narratives around the coming millennium and Y2K, the project was an alternative calendrical system based on five elemental avatars; numerically based cultural machines embodying insistent energetic tendencies then present. The system was made manifest in an installation functioning as the ground for a series of audio visual performances and workshops. The five avatars each presided over a 3 day weekend of programming, their characteristics leading sound and image production as well as choreography and audience engagement.

CCRU developed workshops around the calendrical system while 0rphan drift produced the installation, static works, video and live mixing. We also directed commissioned collaborators for events; the physical performers Traxis and sound by Ocosi, Apache 61 and Dmitri Nakov . CCRU commissioned live audio by Kodwo Eshun and Kode9.

Ritual

Excerpt from Review by Jim Flint, Mute Magazine, issue 13

“While the CCRU was more interested in the theoretical underpinning of the show , the 0rphan¹s side concerned itself with the dynamic reconstruction of various numerically based cultural machines, and to this extent there was a fictional element.- 0D used the notion of the demon in its various forms (though they prefered the term ¹avatar) to code the various elements they were trying to make coherent within the contemporary mediasphere. Thus we were shown the avatar as a unit of sorcery; as a figure historically used to provide an ‘informational outside¹ with physics, a link between logic and noise, as in Maxwell¹s demon; as a software agent, as semi-intelligent and semi-autonomous code-bot; and as a disruptive figure of darkness. For 0D, all of these have in common the casting of the demon as a multiple and individious unit of ontological disintegration, but one that is implicit in any act of communication- something which the angelogies of Michel Serres have already taught us. By recasting each node/operation on the CCRU numagram as an avatar or demon- the art on display- the collages, dancers and audiovisual events- -expressed each avatars realisation as a tendency in cultural production. Thus one avatar, KATAK, grew out of the conflict between electricity and sunlight and linked to belief systems and sacrifice, to the concentrations of power typical of fanatacism, while another, XES, was born of the reality of total surface presented by the camera. One creative conflict, one source of power, for all five of the avatars was the duality that exists between tools and weapons, each able to perform the function of either depending upon the circumstance.”

it has one eye with two pupils and one glassy eye that looks into itself. it is passing through, transforming the space it moves through (imagine earths crust forming), its touch makes sparks, its changes light, an unstable conducter, friction. its overall shape is bleeding strobes. it sheds- a transformation potential and a big trick. it is covered in spiney spiky things, dust and spikes behind the skin. it is missing two middle fingers (wounds for bloodletting). smoke visions. hybridized with artificial blood-lines. it has a mirage coat, sharp claws and a doghead mask. fever, madness, and atrocity. ominous rumblings. pounding solar waves. its sounds and visual attributes are full of rage temper friction brutality and devouring and very slow melting . It has too much energy. blue irradiation. radiation the artificial element. gas leaks. meltdown. it is made up of all the glorified parts of something and invokes serious fanatacism/belief/mass devotion (the electricity over belief equation).

invisibles. outside time. artificial lifeform. only sound and light. a vicious splicer, hits with a lazer and something splits and mutates immediately-no time to remember what it was before. UV with metal, metal/blades/light coming out of its eyes streaks around appearing as speed afterimage. refracting, replicating. ticking machines. precarious states .suckradius: images show its targets. exhales insanity. modular chunks of cyberspace-psychosis. a strobing black-mass of chronodisintegration. number symbol swarms- the swarm built from tiny tiny bits in a very dense mesh- inside coding, meshed up so you cant get through. violent imagery- the war machine. matt black and matt silver. blinding strobe rhythm. unstable dramatic shocks. no linearity. abduction. this is where time falls apart. twin-tracking through traumatic dissociation (whilst constantly doubling-back).it generates parannoia and uncertainty. machine-memory deep inside. atomic particles of lost touch. skin crawling with metal bloodlust.

time rider. passes on time. it’s transvestite female, overly female. it has a third eye scar (blindness). it is touch orientated. it is the most personal/intimate entity (an intimacy based on rumor). it is really high, laughs a lot, and is a tricky fucker. deranged. it carries hooks and is drenched in perfume. it has a lot of different voices and is a nightmare to psychologists. overstimulation. lost. ecstasy and pain. saying two things with one phrase is very key- makes it maze like/escher/ constantly fascinating.

p h y s i c a l t e l e p a t h y through m a g n e t i c m u t a t i o n into t r i c k s t e r t o u c h . erotic, magnetic, currency waves, cellullar radiating. addictions. it is inside out eyes (whites). its vision affects outside itself -it puts vision OUT. complex distortion. brain coral. skininside cybrid evolutionary riskfactor. intimatter traffic. currency.

it is very high tech in lots of ways (not really obvious ones, but a serious operator).it is machines as prosthetics. artificial and natural melt into each other. one body two speeds.

silicon/clone/labyrinth. glitter/trance/attention. media tart.

surface /illusion appears but isnt really what it looks like. it’s got a camera obsession. swap the inside outside round. do it on camera. fiction jokes are on them. surface of the body is madly detailed/intense and changing strange attractors/reflects surrounding on its skin. it is intimate with you through sound and visual. it plays with you out of both. imprints on sensation.

Meshed, 1999
Meshed is a full color printed publication that was produced in conjunction with the Syzygy project conducted at Beaconsfield Arts, London in 1999 by 0rphan drift and the CCRU or Cybernetic Culture Research Unit. We refer to this publication as a Katacomic, or warped version of the graphic novel. It was a print version of the five avatars and included text by CCRU. We printed an edition of 100 copies.

Syzygy Video :: 1999

Although the Hybridised mix showcases the main avatar visuals, it was produced before the Syzygy event took place in order to be available for sale. The Katak and IIS excerpts here mix newer samples and filmed elements and reveal the depths of intensity achieved during the extended live mixes on the night. The other two excerpts give a tantalising glimpse of 0D Syzygy avatar nights.

Hybridized
This video mix was made to showcase the Syzygy avatars, using sampled, filmed, feedback generated and digitally warped footage.

The audio tracks for each avatar were commissioned for Hybridized and were part of the DJ sets during the Syzygy performances.

Although shot on mini DV in the dark, this gives some idea of the atmosphere and relationship between the performers, video and soundscape. The dance eerily manifests the fusion of the Xes and IIS avatars.

The man behind the camera is perhaps possessed by the avatar being summoned here. Coupled with the scarcity of filming light, this makes for an interesting record of the night’s brush with insanity, perfectly capturing the performers’ interpretation of the Katak frequency.
